Alte Brauerei is an old brewery complex founded in Dessau, Germany. The architecture behind the brewery consists of amazing brickwork. Especially the Kesselhaus (eng. Boiler House), which is the project site in our case, contains masonry walls of red bricks and multi-colored steel structure to carry charcoal conveyor. Because of lack of ovens and other appliances, charcoal conveyor is the most dramatic part due to remember the former function of the Kesselhaus.

Nowadays, Kesselhaus is used in order to organize concert events (mostly techno parties). Although Dessau’s population is not very large, the participation rate in the events in Kesselhaus is quite high. The main goal of the proposal is to keep  event hall function of the Kesselhaus. However, this usage is very limited in terms of effective daytime usage of the Kesselhaus.

On the other hand, as known, Dessau is famous for its Bauhaus school. It moved to Dessau in 1925 and many well-known artists and architects showed their effectiveness until Nazis forced the closure of the Bauhaus. Although Bauhaus building and the Dessau Bauhaus Museum take place in Dessau, a significant amount of archive content is protecting inside of the Alte Brauerei. Therefore, Bauhaus Public Archive offers a multi-functional space for both event hall + museum.

“The idea was not only about generating unique personal experiences of particular artworks; it was about merging storage and display in one integrated system. When you see some of the works in any museum’s storage facilities, it is a crying shame that they are not accessible to the public.”
